“Healthy Living”: KUKA Innovation Award 2019 kicked off

The innovation competition for robotics talents from all over the world is entering the next round. The final teams implement their ideas with KUKA hardware, are allowed to present their concepts at the largest industrial fair in the world and the winners receive 20,000 euros. In the sixth year of the award, KUKA has come up with a special topic – for the first time, it’s time for new terrain.

“The KUKA Innovation Award has been a solid institution since 2014. This time we dare something new. We focus on medical robotics”, says Dr. Bernd Liepert, KUKA Chief Innovation Officer and patron of the competition. “Healthy Living” is the theme this year, to which robotics talents from around the world are called to submit their concepts by the beginning of July.

“We have deliberately formulated the topic openly to cover the widest possible range of topics. It is important to us that the applications use the sensitive and safe features of the robot, especially in direct interaction between the human and the robot”, says Dr. Daniel Braun from KUKA Group Research. “The range is wide, from medicine to rehabilitation and care to agriculture, food preparation and general supportive tasks at home or at work.”

An international jury of experts selects the best concepts from all submissions. Finalists will receive a free KUKA lightweight robot and a 3D vision system from Roboception for half a year, where teams can refine and test their concepts.

This year, for the first time, it will be possible to use the lightweight robot KUKA LBR Med for the final. The KUKA LBR Med is the first robotic component to be globally certified for integration into a medical device. Thus, a variety of applications in hospitals and rehabilitation centers are possible.

Springboard Innovation Award

The award offers a unique stage to start off with his idea: the best teams present their concepts at the beginning of April at the Hannover Messe, the largest industrial fair in the world, directly at the KUKA stand. There, the winner of the 20,000-euro-prize will also be there selected. Several teams from the past have already founded their own companies based on their ideas.
